Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to produce creative photo images using photo lighting principles.
It applies to individuals who apply the selection and control of lighting and light quality to enhance the emotive power of photo images taken in the studio and on location. At this level, work is usually carried out independently, with supervision or guidance available as required.
No licensing, legislative or certification conditions apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Elements and Performance Criteria
ELEMENT | PERFORMANCE CRITERIA |
Elements describe the essential outcomes. | Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. |
1. Research light and its relationship to photo imaging | 1.1 Identify and review range of historical and contemporary sources for descriptive and emotive lighting 1.2 Examine theories of light and their application in photo imaging lighting technologies 1.3 Prepare shoot list for range of lighting experiments and confirm lighting techniques and schema with relevant personnel |
2. Experiment with light for complex subjects | 2.1 Arrange shoot requirements for identified lighting experiments 2.2 Explore lighting subjects in range of interior and exterior locations 2.3 Apply lighting techniques and technology safely in experimental process 2.4 Review processes, and adapt lighting techniques and technology to refine effects 2.5 Document results of experiments for incorporation into future works |
3. Apply lighting to create photo image mood | 3.1 Produce series of photo images using appropriate lighting techniques and technology to create emotional and descriptive effects 3.2 Evaluate effectiveness of lighting techniques and technology to achieve effects and note areas for improvement 3.3 Catalogue research reference material and work samples 3.4 Identify future opportunities, work directions, equipment needs and workflow changes resulting from photo lighting experiments |
Evidence of Performance
Evidence of the ability to:
research and apply the theory of light to experiments with lighting techniques and technology
experiment with lighting a subject in interior and exterior locations to achieve a range of effects
prepare and organise shoot list requirements for lighting experiments and productions
document lighting experiments and store research materials and work samples appropriately.
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.
Evidence of Knowledge
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:
outline theories of light relevant to photo imaging
summarise uses and capabilities of photographic lighting equipment and accessories
explain use of lighting to create emotive and descriptive effects.
Assessment Conditions
Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:
locations and studios for photo imaging shoots
photo imaging production equipment
sources of information on lighting techniques and technology.
Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
Foundation Skills
This section describes language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills incorporated in the performance criteria that are required for competent performance.
Skill | Performance Criteria | Description |
Reading | 1.1, 1.2 | Interprets and evaluates extensive visual and textual information to inform investigative lighting exercises |
Writing | 1.3, 2.5, 3.2, 3.3 | Records accurate details of intended lighting experiments, outcomes and improvements using clear language and industry terminology |
Oral Communication | 1.3 | Participates in discussions with others to clarify approach to work Uses listening and questioning to confirm understanding |
Navigate the world of work | 2.3, 3.2, 3.4 | Adheres to safety practices and requirements when using lighting equipment and technology in photographic shoots Takes responsibility for ownership of most aspects of own work, identifying improvements and the practical aspects of implementing changes in own practice |
Get the work done | 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.4, 2.5, 3.1-3.4 | Plans the strategic and operational potential of new technology Works experimentally to achieve creative and technical goals, enhance work processes and increase opportunities Selects criteria and conditions for lighting work, evaluates processes and refines technique Reviews effectiveness of technical and aesthetic decisions to meet objectives and identify improvements Analyses lighting activities and outcomes to decide on changes required in work practice |
